Editor (Contract to Hire)
Who we are
We’re CrunchLabs Studio, the team behind Mark Rober’s YouTube channel and everything else CrunchLabs makes. We build glitter bombs, squirrel obstacle courses, and the occasional thing that probably should have required more permits. Then we turn all of it into videos that a lot of people watch.
What this job actually is
You cut the videos.
Someone hands you 400GB of footage from a shoot that took three weeks and involved a leaf blower, a llama, and a guy who is now afraid of llamas. Your job is to find the story in there and make people watch all the way to the end.
That means:
- Cutting both long-form YouTube videos and short-form stuff for social
- Digging through raw footage and finding the moments that matter (this is the actual skill, everything else is learnable)
- Building rough assemblies, taking notes, picking music, pitching VO lines, flagging where a graphic or a sound effect would land the joke
- Owning pacing, tone, and comedic timing. A joke that lands at 4 frames dies at 12.
- Looking at how a video performed and letting that change how you cut the next one
- Working with producers, editors, and the creative team to make the work better and keep pushing how we tell stories
- Pitching in on story and concepting when you have a better idea than the one on the board (you often will)
- Keeping your project organized so the next person can open it without crying
- Hitting your dates, and telling us early when you can’t
What you need
You should be able to point at videos you’ve cut and say “that’s mine, and it’s good.” That’s the whole bar. We do not care where you went to school or how many years you’ve been doing this.
Specifically:
- You know Premiere well
- You have real storytelling instincts, especially for stuff that isn’t linear
- You understand how post workflows and media files work
- You’re organized, you communicate, and you can juggle a few things at once
- You’re fine with plans changing, because they will
- You’re good to work with. We’re a small team and we’re together a lot.
- You need to be based in the U.S. or authorized to work in the U.S.
Nice to have, not required
- You’ve worked on YouTube or creator-driven content
- Background in digital media, ads, or production
- You can color grade, do sound design, or finish a piece yourself
- You’ve helped a team scale up without everything falling apart
Money
$62.50/hour to start, higher depending on experience and location. This starts as a contract role. If it turns into full-time, that comes with a bigger salary, benefits, and equity.
